Haizhou received his Ph.D. in Environmental Engineering from University of Washington, subsequent to completion of a M.S. and B.S. in Environmental Engineering from University of Washington and Sichuan University, respectively. Prior to starting as an Assistant Professor at UCR, he conducted two-year postdoctoral research at University of California, Berkeley. His educational and professional background is in water quality, treatment and reuse - especially via the application of environmental chemistry principles. Outside of work, Haizhou enjoys tennis, beach volleyball, biking, kayaking, classical music (favorite composer Mozart), impressionism oil painting, and learning Romantic languages (current endeavors are Italian and French).

Graduate Students

Lucy Li - PhD student

ll

B.S. Environmental Biology, California State Polytechnic University, Pomona, 2013.

Email: lucylee88@hotmail.com

Lucy graduated from Cal Poly Pomona in 2013 with a bachelor degree in Environmental Biology. She started her graduate research at UCR in Fall 2013. Her research is focused on groundwater remediation using metal catalytic chemical redox reaction, specifically, activated peroxydisulfate as an effective radical generator, as well as the toxicity of the byproducts generated from the reaction. As an IGERT fellow, her long term career goal is to improve the quality and quantity of recycle water and minimize environmental impact caused by the wastewater discharge and industrial contamination.  (Click here for current CV)

mcMichelle Chebeir - PhD student

B.S. Chemical Engineering, California State Polytechnic University, Pomona, 2013.

Email: michellecheb@gmail.com

A Southern California native, Michelle Chebeir earned her Bachelor’s degree in Chemical Engineering at Cal Poly Pomona. Through her undergraduate research in water treatment, she realized the need for public awareness and policy as an integral part of the success of good engineering. Her motivation lies in bridging the apparent gap between science and society as all research is interdisciplinary at heart. Michelle believes that the pursuit of PhD will allow her to enhance her skills as an engineer and broaden her knowledge in public policy. She is doing research on hexavalent chromium redox processes in water treatment as she pursues her PhD in Chemical and Environmental Engineering.
